Year-Over-Year Gains Top 70% at Northern Livestock Video Auction
September 16, 2025
Cattle sellers across the Northern region saw a sharp jump in calf and feeder prices during the September 2025 Video Auction compared to a year ago, according to a price breakdown provided by Northern Livestock Video Auction.
Steers
Steer calves posted some of the most dramatic year-over-year gains. Across all weight classes, the average increase was $163/cwt, up 56.6% from 2024. That translates to more than $1,051 per head, a 59% jump in value.
The 700–749 lb steers led the way with an astounding $1,322 per head increase, a 73% gain.
Even lighter calves, like the 400–449 lb class, were up over $1,014 per head or 65.2%.
Heavier steers above 900 lbs still posted gains above $1,100 per head, with increases averaging more than 50% compared to last year.
Heifers
Heifers also sold significantly higher, with an average increase of $152/cwt, up 57.7% year-over-year. That equals a $944 per head rise, nearly 59% higher than September 2024.
The strongest surge came in the 600–649 lb heifer class, which climbed $178/cwt, up 73.3%, boosting values by over $1,076 per head.
Heifers weighing 500–549 lbs weren’t far behind, gaining $938 per head, a 64.3% improvement.
Even the heavier end of the heifer offering, such as 850–949 lb weights, saw close to $950/head increases.

Market Perspective
These price jumps reflect continued tight cattle supplies across the region and strong demand from feeders and backgrounders heading into fall. Sellers marketing calves this September enjoyed some of the sharpest year-over-year price appreciation seen in recent years.
