Rocky Mountain Farmers Union Disappointed with Climate Smart Funding Cancellation
April 25, 2025
The USDA recently announced the cancellation of the Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities, and it's very disappointing news, says Rocky Mountain Farmers Union President Chad Franke for their organization's 20,000 members across Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.
"We were actually in year two of a three year, grant award, doing some soil health work, mostly in Colorado," said Franke. As you know, here in the Mountain West where we don't have enough water, soil health really revolves around water holding capacity for water use. The first year we saw some good results, from some of the producers that were participating, getting some good yield results from this work. We disagree with the administration. This is not enough. This is not something that doesn't have a good use, in the Mountain West. Any drop of water that we can use more efficiently is a very good thing. And this grant was proven to be useful in that regard."
