Miles City Bucking Horse Sale Marks 75 Years with Bigger Events & Payouts
May 7, 2026
One of Montana’s most iconic western traditions is celebrating a major milestone this year, as the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale marks its 75th anniversary with expanded events, bigger payouts, and a growing global audience.
MCBHS Board of Governors President John Morford says the 2026 celebration builds on decades of history while continuing to evolve.
“This year's our 75th anniversary", said Morford. The sale started in 1951, and we missed, one year there with Covid, but so this year marks our 75th actual sale. We've got a lot of special things planned. We just got done with our opening weekend horse races. So, we hope we got most of the bugs worked out and we're ready to tackle Mother's Day coming up. And then move right into the sale."
The event has grown far beyond its eastern Montana roots, now drawing visitors from across the United States and around the world.
To celebrate the milestone, organizers are raising the stakes—literally. The PRCA Match Bronc Ride purse has been increased from $50,000 to $75,000, attracting top competitors nationwide.
"That's got the PRCA saddle bronc riders in a tizzy," said Morford. "We only take 30 guys, and, there was a 104 saddle bronc riders entered to try to get one of those 30 spots."
The event has also expanded into a full four-day experience, featuring concerts, rodeo action, horse races, and family-friendly activities.
Country music star Trace Adkins headlines this year’s entertainment lineup, adding to the event’s broader appeal.
Morford says the organization is also stepping up its branding, launching its own merchandise line for the first time.
“I sent some of our ladies to the NFR this year," said Morford. "We kind of got our eyes opened by some members of the PRCA marketing side when they said, you guys understand what your event is. And, how it is world famous. We kind of got told in we need to start acting like it."
Despite the growth, Morford says the heart of the Bucking Horse Sale remains rooted in community and western heritage.
“This is kind of one of those times of the year where you can just take a break, come to town, watch some great events, and have a beer with your neighbor,” he said.
With expanded programming, record payouts, and international attention, the 75th anniversary of the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale is shaping up to be one of the biggest celebrations yet.
