Montana Ram and Ewe Sale Results: Prices and Highlights

The dust has settled at the 101st Annual Montana Ram Sale and 13th Annual Montana Ewe Sale hosted at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds in Miles City, Montana. 40 Consignors from across Montana offered over 350 head of ewes and 290 head of rams. Buyers hauled sheep home to South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, and across Montana.

101st Annual MT Ram Sale (September 17)

A total of 290 bucks were offered and sold, for an overall average of $1,247/hd. The Ram Sale grossed $360,050

Bieber Land and Nikki Bieber from Brockway, MT donated a trained bell weather to kick off the Ram Sale. The total proceeds of $2,150 were collected to support legislative efforts.

The blackface breeds averaged $1,371/hd on 41 head. Gibbs Range Rams of Miles City topped the blackface portion of the sale, selling a Suffolk buck for $2,600 to Capra Ranches of Boyes, MT.

Rambouillet bucks sold with an overall average of $1,478/hd on 54 head. Helle Rambouillet of Dillon topped the Rambouillet portion of the sale, selling a Rambouillet buck for $4,000 to Peter Wirtzfeld of Sentinel Butte, ND.

Three South African Meat Merino Cross bucks were offered by Montana Ag. Experiment Station of Bozeman, averaging $517/hd.

Two Ile de France bucks were offered by Wade Clark of Glendive averaging $1,400/hd.

Four American Cormo bucks were offered by Running Wild American Cormo of Broadus averaging $975/hd.

The Targhee sale average was $1,149 on 187 head. The high selling Targhee ram was offered by Wacy & Jami Ortmann of Wolf Point, MT, selling for $9500 to Bob Innes of Innes Ranch in Gillette, WY.

Sale Gross on 290 rams: $360,050.
Rambouillet average on 54 head: $1,478.
Blackface Breeds average on 41 head: $1,371.
SAMM average on 3 head: $517.
Ile de France average on 2 head: $1,400.
American Cormo average on 4 head: $975/hd.
Targhee ram average on 187 head: $1,149.

13th Annual Montana Ewe Sale (September 16)
A total of 382 ewes sold, for an overall average of $586/hd. The ewe sale grossed $223,675

John and Betty Sampsel of Hughes Newford, from Stanford, MT donated a yearling Targhee Ewe to kick off the Ewe Sale. The total proceeds of $8550 were collected to support legislative efforts.

Montana Sheep Co. of Fort Shaw, MT topped the ewe sale with a consignment of 10 head each of Targhee ewes, selling for $850/hd.

The volume buyer was LeeRoy Horton from Christmas Valley, Oregon.
Whitefaced ewes sold on site averaged $593/hd.
Hair ewes sold on site averaged $358/hd.
Blackfaced ewes sold on site averaged $642/hd.
Average on pens of 10: $549/hd
Average on pens of 20: $604/hd.
